Hayling Herald Bowls
Hayling wins are adding up
By Jo Mills from Hayling Bowls Club
THE long-running saga of the much delayed
Open 2 Woods knockout competition for 2025
finally ended in January when the winner, Stu
Marsland, was presented with his certificate and
award from club president Chris Robotham,
pictured right.
This year the competition is scheduled for May
17th – hopefully it goes ahead with lots of entries
and with no hitches.
With some hard frosts and heavy rain preventing some roll ups and the first Mixed Floodlight
League match of the year also postponed because
of bad weather, the league finally got under way
on January 22nd. With nine teams in the league
Cowplain have made a good start followed by Purbrook, both with two wins.
In the Men’s Floodlight League after three weeks
Cowplain Falcons are in the top position with
Hayling in second place, both with three wins but
Cowplain doing better on shot difference at the
moment.
In the first 2026 game of the Winter League
6 Mixed Triples, Hayling Island played against
Bedhampton at home. The result was a home win
86 : 68 - winning on three rinks, with a draw on
the 4th and two rinks lost. The overall scores on
the winning rinks were 61 : 39 which included a
great win for Martin Hopper, Carole Law and Jerry
Oddie whose score was 22 : 6 - without this boost
the overall score would have been much closer.
Also in the away match to Waterlooville on January 28th was another win for Hayling Island 80 : 74
with the same rink results.
Overall, so far we have had four wins and the
two games we lost we only went down by five
points. With two matches to go our last match in
this league is away against Cowplain on March
17th.
The Hayling Ladies are playing friendly floodlight games against Cowplain and Bedhampton on
some Wednesday evenings during February and
March.
We have our Annual Charity Coffee Morning
together with our 2026 Enrolment Day on Thursday, March 19th, then before we know it we will
be back playing in the Portsmouth & District
Leagues, the Reflex League and this year we are
also entering a ladies team into the Havant Ladies
Bowls League.
