Hayling Herald Rowing
Coastal Rowing Academy
ROWFIT classes in the new Fitness Centre has been busy with the
Coastal Rowing Academy Club’s
Scillies Teams – working hard to
improve Strength and Conditioning.
Our new physical trainer – Annabel Parker – is leading these sessions
on Mondays for men, and Thursday
evenings for women.
We have also re-introduced our Get
Up and Go! RowFit Lite Classes from
last winter, now running on Tuesday
and Wednesday evenings at 6pm7pm.
New open courses are starting on
March 3rd, 4th and 5th. If you haven’t
tried this form of functional fitness –
come and have a go.
The tasters are free and the eightweek courses only cost £60 in small
classes. For those wanting it hardcore,
join Fitness with Lorinz on Tuesday
and Saturdays – RowFit for the very
fit only!
Coastal sculling
We are now into the new season of
Learn to Row courses for novices or
returning rowers – keen to try saltwater rowing. Gig rowers got out to
44
practise for the Scillies championship,
getting used to the need to race twice
a day over three days.
Award wins
At the Havant Borough Sports Association Awards Night, we celebrated
the Veteran Sportswoman of the Year
– Karen Wilkins – nominated by the
Coastal Rowing Academy Club.
Her citation was for demonstrating
that even late in life, you can take up
a new sport, throw yourself into it
and become proficient enough to row
the Great River Race, Loch Ness and
now training for the World Pilot Gig
Championships!
Also, Mike Gilbert, pictured right,
was awarded Veteran Sportsman of
the Year – nominated by Langstone
Cutters Rowing Club for services to
Coastal Rowing.
His citation was about supporting
the establishment of the Langstone
Cutters, the Langstone Pilot Gig
Club and the Coastal Rowing Academy Club, loaning boats, leading on
training, coaching and with an accent
on Get Up and Go! bringing rowing
to hundreds of new people across the
three harbours.
