Langstone Pilot Gig Club members out in the harbour
By Jo Jhanji
WHILE our competitive crews continue training for the upcoming regatta season, Langstone
Pilot Gig Club (LPGC) also remains committed
to welcoming and nurturing new rowers.
Although we accept members of all ages, we are
particularly keen to enlist members aged under 25 to help build a strong foundation for the
future of the club.
We are a very welcoming and inclusive bunch
who love nothing more than meeting new
recruits. You start with a free taster session,
followed by three or four open and learn to row
sessions, held on Saturday afternoons, where
you get out on the water, learn some theory, and
begin your gig rowing journey.
Once our coaches feel you are ready, you move
on to development training on Saturday mornings, where you hone your skills in mixed crews.
At this stage, you are invited to join the club
and are welcome to take part in our extremely
popular Just Row sessions.
From there, you progress to men’s or ladies’
training held Saturday, Sunday and midweek.
Members can also opt for endurance training on
Saturdays, focusing on longer, sustained rows
rather than sprint training.
At this stage, you qualify to compete in regattas
and endurance events against other clubs.
Our junior rowers, typically aged 12 to 16, train
weekends and compete in regattas, with progression to the U-25s crew and men’s or ladies’
training.
Just Row non-coached sessions run throughout the year on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, with additional evening sessions
during the summer months. Evening sessions
prioritise working members, ensuring everyone
has the opportunity to enjoy some social rowing
time.
We hold regular maintenance days to keep our
boats and equipment in tip-top condition —
something we take great pride in as a club.
We also run Tool Box Talks, offering members
a refresher on the essentials of rowing and safety
in and around boats, alongside plenty of other
important activities.
We love socialising together off the water, and
there are plenty of events throughout the year to
keep the fun going.
While we’re talking fun, our club intra-regattas are not to be missed — a great day of mixed
crews from across the membership, competing
in straight-line races between the bridge and
Northney Marina’s north slipway, followed by
prize-giving, snacks, and hot soup.
