Medic pens kids’ first aid book
AN Island paramedic has
launched a new children’s
first aid book called Mini
Medics, designed to teach
young children life-saving
skills in a fun, friendly and
age-appropriate way.
Zara Willis, who works on
the frontline as a paramedic,
created the book after years of
responding to emergencies involving children and families.
She noticed that many situations could feel less frightening for children if they understood what was happening
and knew simple ways to help
or stay safe.
‘Children are incredibly capable when they’re given the
right tools,’ Zara said. ‘Mini

about helping them stay calm, recognise when something isn’t right, and

‘Even small things like knowing how to call for help, put someone in the
recovery position, or what to do if someone is choking can make a huge
difference.’
The book uses simple language and child-friendly illustrations to cover
topics such as calling 999, basic first aid, choking, recovery position, and
what to do if someone is unwell or injured.
It is aimed at young children and has been created to feel approachable
rather than scary.
Alongside the book, Zara also runs Mini Medics sessions locally, where
children can learn basic first aid skills in a relaxed, supportive environment.
These sessions are designed to build confidence, encourage empathy, and
