Hayling Herald Community update
Hayling Island Piecemakers
By Carol Carter
THE Hayling Island Piecemakers marked the start of their 25th
anniversary year in January with
a well-attended and lively meeting
that left members feeling inspired
and full of creative energy.
The guest speaker was Sara Sullivan, a respected quilter known for
her passion for hexagon patchwork,
commonly known as ‘hexies’.
Members were treated to an
engaging and heartfelt talk that
combined personal storytelling with
creative insight.
Sara spoke about her long-standing love of hexies and how working
with the small geometric shapes has
influenced her quilting journey. She
shared how hexagon work encourages patience and creativity and
explained how these deceptively
simple shapes can be used to create
striking and intricate designs, some-
times using fabric from much loved
old clothes.
Her enthusiasm for the craft was
infectious, and many attendees
commented on how motivating it
was to hear about the possibilities
that can grow from such traditional
techniques.
The talk was illustrated with examples of Sara’s work, showing how

hexies and other geometric shapes
can be combined in both classic and
contemporary ways.
Members of the group were also
given the opportunity to show the
meeting how they have used hexies
to create their own quilts and other
items, all lovingly hand sewn.
As always, the meeting provided
a warm and welcoming space for
quilters of all abilities to connect
and learn from one another.
The Hayling Island Piecemakers
meet regularly throughout the year
and continue to be an active and
supportive community for anyone
with an interest in patchwork, quilting and other textile crafts.
This first meeting of the year set a
positive tone for the months ahead.
The Speaker at the March meeting
will be Liz Ashurst talking about
her sewing and embroidery journey.
Also in March the group will be
running a charity day when members will be giving their time and
fabrics to create patchwork designs
to make cushions which will be
donated to Age Concern.
New members are always welcome, and further details about
future meetings and events are
