Hayling Flower Club
By Susan Marston
WE began the new year with a
super demonstration from area
demonstrator, Katie Baxter.
At the beginning of her demonstration, Katie said that she was going to give us inspiration with new
ideas and techniques for foam-free
flower arranging and she certainly
did just that.
Katie began her demonstration
using a nest-style basket and a bowl.
This was filled with play sand and a
chicken-wire caging, to stop movement of the floral material – water
was then added to the sand so that
the texture was like that of floral
foam.
Katie filled this with tall twigs of
spirea which gave great shape and
texture, tall blue irises, rosemary,
conifer, butterfly ranunculus, double
lisianthus and cream yellow spray
roses at the base which gave her
arrangement a real spring feel.
We were reminded of the techniques for making a hand-tied
bouquet as Katie made a mixed
hand-tied using a frame made from
a 12in wreath ring as a support; she
filled this with a variety of textures
and shapes – lime button chrysanthemums, magenta clematis, butterfly ranunculus, and lisianthus with
Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ (black in
colour) as foliage.
Continuing her foam free theme,
Katie used an oblong vase, half-full
with water which she had filled
with pre-cut twigs – this structure
enabled her to wedge flowers in-between the twigs and into all four
corners of the vase – pussy willow,
blue irises, magenta clematis, lavender coloured freesias and beautiful
white tulips – a simple but very
clever technique and a beautiful
combination of spring flowers!
Katie decided to go big for her
final arrangement using a vintage-style urn made of a lightweight metal. She filled this with
beautiful spring flowers, including
pussy willow, and added peach roses
throughout the arrangement with
trails of ivy as an adornment.
The arrangement was very dramatic. She cleverly nestled the roots
of some narcissi bulbs into the
bio-degradable oasis at the edge of
her arrangement so that they could
continue to grow.
By the end of Katie’s demonstration on a cold, bleak and wet day in
January, with all the beautiful blue,
yellow and purple flowers, we all felt
that spring was well and truly on the
way.
Come along and join us – we meet
on the second Thursday of each
month, except August, at the URC
Hall, Hollow Lane, at 1.45pm.

Hayling Lions: A day of scavenging
By Nick McCormick
AS the days grow longer and hopefully a little
warmer we all enjoy the signs of new life.
One of the earliest and bravest heralds of
spring is surely the daffodil. Many Islanders and
visitors alike will soon be enjoying the cheery
sight of the many bulbs planted by The Lions
appearing around our Island, particularly around
the Lidl roundabout. A welcome splash of colour
as we head towards the summer!
Hayling Lions are here to serve and we are
delighted to report that our PSA Screening Programme was, as ever, very well utilised by islanders and hopefully put many minds at ease.
A full and busy summer awaits The Lions kicking off with our always popular and well supported Easter Treasure and Scavenging Hunt.
The event will be held this year on Bank Holiday Monday, June 6th. Everybody is invited to
come along for a fun day of hunting, scavenging
and exploring, possibly discovering parts of our
Island not visited before.
The hunt will start at 10.30am and will conclude with prize-giving at The Copp Memorial.
Please do come along, teams may constitute up
to eight competitors.
Please note that your team should be registered
before Monday, March 30th. If you would like to
enter a team please do so via our website (Haylinglions.co.uk) or call into our new charity shop
in Elm Grove and bag a bargain at the same time.
Clues for the hunt will be sent out by email to
all entrants. Lion Louise Martin will be on hand
between 10.30am and 11am at the start of the
hunt (Copp Memorial car park) with details of
clues if needed.
As usual, all contestants will receive a complimentary Easter Egg.
On this, our fifth year of holding this fun event,
why not be a team of scavengers for the day? All
money raised will be spent by The Lions here on
our Island.
Hayling Lions are delighted to report that our
street collection over the Christmas festivities
raised £279.40. The generosity of Islanders has
enabled Lions to play an ever greater role within
our community.
