Hayling Herald Community update
Arts trail is back!
By Karen Morling
PREPARATIONS are underway for the next Hayling
Island Arts Trail.
For those who are not aware
of the arts trail, it was initially
part of Havant Arts Trail from
2004 – 2011, which was part
funded by Havant Borough
Council. Once this funding
ended, Hayling and Havant/
Waterlooville continued to run
a yearly event in May, known
as the May Days Arts Trail.
The decision was taken in
2018 to base the event just on
Hayling Island and on one
weekend only, with artists
from off the island invited to
display their work collectively
at larger multi-artist venues.
The trail did not take place
in 2022 or 2021 due to Covid
considerations. In 2022, the
name changed to Hayling
Island Arts Trail, to give a real
sense of identity to the artists
who garner inspiration from
the beautiful Island where we
live and work.
We have a multitude of
artists opening their studios,
homes, and gardens on the
weekend of May 9th and 10th
so please add this to your
diary. There will be painters,
photographers, glass work
artists, jewellery makers and so
much more.
They will be taking up
residence in venues such as
the Community Centre and
Girl Guide headquarters in
Radford Hall, and this year we
have a new addition which is
St Mary’s Church Hall. We also
have a few new artists to add to
this year’s trail, making it even
more exciting with new treasures added.
We are working hard behind
the scenes to confirm numbers, design and print brochures, and advertising so you
will start to see and read more
about the trail.
We can only hope for the
same glorious weather that we
had last year to show off our
amazing creations.
Help to get fit and quit
AS winter continues to put pressure on people’s health and local services, more residents
are taking positive steps to stay well, active, and
independent through prevention-first support in
their communities.
Recently published figures from Hampshire
County Council’s Public Health team show that
thousands of residents are benefitting from a
wide range of local health and wellbeing programmes funded by the County Council, from
strength and balance classes to quit smoking
support.
By helping people take positive steps to maintain their health earlier, issues can be prevented,
conditions managed sooner and reliance on
more specialist care reduced. This is especially
important during the colder months when illness, falls and loneliness are more common.
Councillor Stephen Reid, Hampshire County
Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: ‘Winter can be a difficult time for
many people’s health, especially for older residents and those living with long-term conditions.
Simple actions really do add up.
‘Every health check, every vaccine, every
10
action to be more active and every step taken to
improve wellbeing can make a real difference.
By working closely with local communities and
partners, our Public Health team is helping people look after themselves and stay independent
for as long as possible.’
These are just some of the initiatives funded
by Hampshire County Council that are helping
people improve their health and wellbeing:
n Stop smoking and quit vaping support, helping
people reduce their risk of long-term illness
n Weight management services that support
healthier lifestyles and reduce related health risks
n More than 125 Steady and Strong exercise
classes across Hampshire, helping older residents
improve strength and balance, reduce falls, and
stay confident in everyday life
n Be Active encourages adults of all ages to
make small changes that improve physical and
mental wellbeing
n Mental Wellbeing Hampshire – a partnership
of organisations offering targeted support for
communities facing the greatest health challenges, including mental wellbeing and suicide prevention, domestic abuse, sexual and reproductive
health, and substance misuse support
n NHS Health Checks that help spot early signs
of heart disease and other conditions before they
become more serious
The team is also working closely with planning
and transport colleagues to help create healthier
neighbourhoods, including better access to green
spaces and safer routes for walking and cycling,
making it easier for residents to stay active as
part of everyday life.
This prevention-first approach supports the
County Council’s priority to protect the most
vulnerable residents and ease pressure on social care and health services. Residents can find
information about the local support on offer
and simple steps they can take to feel healthier
by visiting the County Council’s Public Health
webpages.
