Hayling Herald Bowls
Floodlight season begins
By Jo Mills from Hayling Bowls Club
IT was perfect weather for our Finals Weekend in August, which this
year had to be extended to a week!
Besides the usual morning and afternoon sessions on the Saturday and
Sunday, two matches were played on
the previous Friday evening (21st),
with the final competition match
taking place on Thursday 27th.
There were some pretty nail-biting
and close matches (see picture –
which bowl is closest to the jack?).
The spectators at every session had
some great matches to watch, as usual, with some seasoned finalists and
some comparatively new members
also reaching the finals, which was
good to see.
All the results are on haylingislandbowls.org, together with a picture of
each session’s finalists.
The extended match schedule was
to enable Jan Brindley and Sue Lawes
to play their club finals matches at
home and to compete in the National
Bowls Finals at Royal Leamington
Spa, representing Hampshire in the
Ladies’ Pairs Finals.
They played against Cumbria on
46
the Sunday and, unfortunately, lost
20-16 after 18 ends. The ladies they
lost to then went on to win all their
other matches and made it all the
way to the final, where they were
runners-up. It was a great achievement to get there – well done, ladies!
October sees the start of the Hayling Island Floodlight Leagues season
again. The Men’s Triples will be
played on Mondays and the Mixed
Triples on Thursdays, both at 6pm.
This season, we have new clubs joining in from Gosport and Petersfield.
We will also be playing Mixed Up
Pairs on Tuesday mornings and afternoons, and Friday Mixed Triples will
be starting another season, plus the
Winter Carpet League will be starting.
After a very busy summer of internal club knockout competitions,
various leagues, and county matches
and competitions, we will still have
plenty to keep us busy, along with
our regular roll-ups on Mondays,
Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
