Hayling Herald Police and Crime Commissioner
RNLI abuse
THE Police and Crime Commissioner has condemned the abuse of
Portsmouth RNLI volunteers and
called for increased Border Force
capacity.
Donna Jones, said: ‘Following the
RNLI’s decision to temporarily close
its lifeboat station in Portsmouth
due to staff welfare, I want to acknowledge the unlawful behaviour
directed towards RNLI volunteers
whose purpose is to keep people
safe on the water.
‘This comes following horrific
abuse and fear directed at their
volunteers on Sunday 6 September
in Portsmouth and the subsequent
abuse that has occurred since.
‘It should not be for the RNLI
to manage boats entering Britain
illegally.
‘While I am pleased the RNLI has
confirmed search and rescue cover continues to be provided in the
Portsmouth area, coordinated by
HM Coastguard, I remain deeply
concerned about our water-based
borders in southern England.
‘I’m calling on the government
to urgently increase the capacity of
the UK Border Force and Border
Security Command in the English
Channel and reassure law enforcement agencies this has been done.’

Preventative work
is vital to support
policing
From the Police and Crime
Commissioner, Donna Jones
REGULAR readers of this column will know that I am a strong
advocate of communities working
together to help reduce crime.
While my number one priority
remains putting more police on our
streets, officers can’t do it alone.
Last month, I wrote about the
wide range of local organisations
working with young people and
their families on Hayling Island –
offering support and opportunities
to make their lives better and contribute to a safer society.
Three of those organisations – Politely Rebellious, Music Fusion, and
Motive8 South – have all received
money from my Safer Communities
Fund.
The Safer Communities Fund
supports local projects which work
to reduce crime and anti-social
behaviour.
In the first six months of funding,
Politely Rebellious worked with
nearly 4,000 teenagers on Hayling
Island and the surrounding areas,
delivering interactive school-based
sessions educating them on the
risks of digital exploitation, including cyber bullying, grooming, and
harmful online behaviours.
By using real-life case studies,
they’re helping improve young people’s knowledge of exploitation and
reducing their risk of being drawn
into crime.
Music Fusion’s Maverick LINES
project has been working with
young people affected by serious
violence, crime and exploitation.
Through personalised support,
one-to-one sessions, group work,
and creative projects, they’ve been
writing, recording, and releasing
music reflecting their experiences.
Many of the young people who’ve
taken part this year have seen big
improvements in their lives – some
have not had any involvement with
the police while some have got jobs.
These are hugely positive outcomes.
Motiv8’s Youth Mentoring Service
is referral-based. They work with
those at risk of becoming known to
police.
This preventative work is vital and
has seen participants’ behaviour,
communication and life-choices improve, helping protect them against
being drawn into crime.
As you can see, the variety of
support out there for young people
is wide-ranging and I am happy to
offer funding to any organisation
which is helping to make our community safer to live and work in.
Last month, I opened applications
for this year’s round of funding
from the SCF and I would encourage charities and organisations on
Hayling Island to get in contact if
they haven’t already.
You haven’t got long left. Applications close on October 16th.
