Community Update Hayling Herald
Age Concern
By Neil Hawkins
VOLUNTEERS were greeted with
happy and smiling faces by members when doors reopened at Age
Concern Lunch Club last month
after the summer break.
The sparkling Sunnyside Hall
awaited members following a deep
clean by local company Focus Cleaning during August.
Electrical appliances display new
PAT testing labels and the store
room is restocked.
The summer break was also used
to update our Procedures Manual,
devise menus for the weeks ahead
and prepare the minibus driver rota
through to Christmas.
The garden and grounds are looking very tidy thanks to the hard work
of committee member Debbie and
the father-in-law of a former volunteer who still calls in to lend a hand
and pass on his gardening knowledge when he visits the Island.
Age Concern Lunch Club is based
at Sunnyside Hall, 14 Webb Lane
and provides nutritious lunches on a
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for
elderly residents (over 70) living on
Hayling. With support from Hayling
Island Businessmen’s Club and their
15-seater minibus, we can provide
a door to door service to members
taking in the sights as they travel
around the Island.
Membership is growing but we still
have a few spaces available especially
on a Monday and Tuesday. If you
would like more details, please call
07544 218855 and leave a message
with your name and phone number.
Kay will call you back to discuss
membership.
The Lunch Club is a registered
charity administered by three trustees and a Management Committee
of 10 volunteers. The committee
meets quarterly and has a nice mix of
skills and talents covering the various tasks needed to ensure the club
prospers.
The voluntary sector is such a vital
part of Hayling Island with so many
groups offering services or facilities
to improve the lives of residents,
young and old.
If you are reading this article and
could offer some time to join our
happy band of volunteers by serving
tea/coffee, helping on the minibus or
provide an admin or IT skill, please
contact us on 07544 218855. We
will be pleased to hear from you and
training will be given.
In future articles, I will focus on
our volunteers to share their interests
and reasons why they give up their
time to help the Lunch Club.
We have a pilot, marathon runner, former football referee, Zumba
enthusiast, cat lover and catering
lecturer to name a few!
Focus at the Lunch Club is to
provide a safe, warm and stimulating
environment where elderly residents
can meet to chat over tea and biscuits, take part in a fun raffle and
enjoy a delicious lunch in a convivial
atmosphere.
Banter, putting the world to rights
and discussing Pompey’s performance all feature together with local
issues like bin collections and of
course, a chance to read the latest
Hayling Herald.
Sunnyside Hall (pictured) is available for hire seven days a week and a
great venue for small groups, meetings or family parties.
We have a number of long-standing hall hirers who have become
friends over the years and we value
their support.
Details of the hall, room layout and
facilities including photographs are
available online by Googling Age
Concern Lunch Club Hayling Island.
The hire charge is very competitive
- only £10 per hour and we have onsite parking in front of the hall.
Bookings are via the website using
the easy to follow calendar booking
system.
