Hayling Herald
Dear readers,
Since the launch of the Hayling Herald seven years ago this month, we’ve always
sought to reflect in these pages the wonderful sense of community we have
experienced every single day on this precious island we call home.
We’ve prided ourselves on being non-political, reporting the facts about the
events that affect those of us who live and work here. On just one day in 2024,
we received complaints from local politicians on opposing sides — Labour and
Conservative — each alleging that we were biased towards the other. We were
obviously doing something right.
The events of the past few weeks in Hayling and Portsmouth, and the venom
directed at the RNLI, have left us reeling. The scenes of thuggery just across the
water at the anti-immigration protests in Eastney and Southsea sent a chill down
our spines.
Hayling is a place of beauty and peace, and somewhere people have found
sanctuary for hundreds of years — even Russian aristocrats.
We never thought we would see such division and hatred here as we have
in recent weeks. Hayling is an island. We are sailors, swimmers, kayakers,
windsurfers and rowers — but above all, we are good-hearted, warm people.
Attacks on the RNLI and its volunteers — among them our friends and family,
the very people who help keep us safe and allow us to enjoy such rich lives on the
water — is something we hope never to witness again.
Best wishes,
Elise and Jerry
