Community update Hayling Herald
Specialist yoga for cancer patients
A NEW specialist Yoga for Cancer course is
launching on Hayling, offering people living
with cancer a gentle, supportive and discreet
space to move, breathe, rebuild strength and
connect with others.
The six-week course is being led by Anita Howarth, an experienced yoga teacher and former
therapeutic radiographer who spent 30 years
working with cancer patients.
Anita has recently completed an advanced
specialist training in Yoga for Cancer, bringing
together her passion for yoga with her extensive
clinical experience.
‘Having worked with cancer patients for so
many years, I wanted to bring my passion for
yoga together with my extensive clinical experience and offer something specifically tailored to
people affected by cancer,’ says Anita. ‘Yoga offers
a tailored way to help people reconnect with
their bodies, whether they are newly diagnosed,
in active treatment or in recovery.’
The classes are suitable for anyone with a cancer diagnosis, whatever their cancer type or stage
of treatment. The course is deliberately small
and supportive, and one-to-one sessions are also
available for anyone who would prefer not to join
a group, with respect for each participant’s priva-
cy and individual circumstances.
Sessions will be slow, gentle and adaptable, incorporating breathing exercises, restorative yoga
and strengthening practices that gradually build
strength and flexibility.
The course is designed to support participants
with some of the physical and emotional challenges that can accompany cancer and its treatment, including cancer-related fatigue, anxiety,
sleep difficulties and reduced strength and flexibility. Sessions can also be adapted for people
with medical devices.
Other potential benefits of regular gentle
movement include supporting lymphatic function, maintaining bone health and helping man-
age common treatment-related issues such as
lymphoedema, constipation and neuropathy.
Most importantly, the classes offer a small,
welcoming and discreet environment where
participants can meet others who understand the
experience of living with cancer, with everyone’s
privacy respected.
Cancer Research UK’s advice is exercise is safe,
possible and helpful for many people with cancer
or who have finished cancer treatment. Becoming active can help you feel stronger, energised
and more confident in your body again.
The course takes place at Hayling Island Library,
every Tuesday for six weeks, starting October 6th
from 5.30pm–6.30pm. The price is £60.
Before the course, participants will be invited
to complete a confidential health questionnaire.
This information will be treated with care and
discretion, and participants will have the opportunity to speak privately with Anita about their
individual needs, concerns and goals.
There will also be an opportunity to speak
privately with Anita before the course begins to
discuss any specific needs, concerns or personal
goals.
