Hayling Island u3a: Yacht racing
By Alan Bartlett
THE speaker this month is Ian
Worley who, although a Chartered
Accountant, has sailed since the age
of seven and loves sailing and the
sea.
After many years working in the
City of London he was a bit bored
and needed some adventure in his
life. Then in 1977 he saw an advert
in The Times looking for volunteers
to crew the yacht Great Britain II in
a sailing race around the world via
Cape Horn.
Along with 15 others he enrolled
for the adventure, each paying £4,000
towards the cost of entering the huge
yacht into the second Whitbread
Round the World Race.
This was an all-out race for nine
months and Ian was chosen because
of his experience, as one of the three
watch leaders. Sailing at breakneck
speeds of 35 knots, and in some of
the most inhospitable waters on
earth, there were inevitably accidents.
In the depths of the Southern
Ocean the skipper and a crew member were injured during sail handing
in a storm, and Ian took over as
temporary skipper.
On another occasion a ferocious
storm knocked the yacht onto it’s
side, and whilst passing the Falkland
Islands she was struck by lightning.
All these caused damage to gear
and they had to be overcome whilst
racing flat-out to maintain position.
So, how did they get on?
Come and find out at the next u3a
meeting on Thursday, October 15th
at 2pm at Hayling Island Community Centre.

Hayling Hunniz: Fascinating talks
By Nicola Bayliss
HAYLING Hunniz WI met on September 1st after a summer break,
during which we held a Summer Social
at Sam’s Sunflowers and manned the
secateur stand to raise money for our
nominated charity, Hayling Holiday
Lunches.
Our September meeting saw the
return of Dr Jenny Weaver, a retired detective from Hampshire Police, who gave a very interesting and
thought-provoking talk about a case of
a missing person she had investigated
in 1997.
She took us through the steps of the
investigation and asked us to think
about how we would have proceeded.
Hunniz meet on the first Tuesday of
each month at Hayling Island Community Centre from 7 to 9pm.
We are a very friendly and welcoming group so please do come along and
enjoy the varied activities we offer.
The WI offers women the opportunity
to make new friends, learn new skills
and campaign on wide-ranging issues.
